Aptitude Testing is a valuable indicator of the inherent natural mental potential of a dog and can be useful in breeding programs. It is open to all dogs, but aimed primarily at Working Breeds. However, many Hunting, Herding and Utility dogs are also able to successfully complete the test. It assesses, inter alia, approachability, drive to hunt, nervous disposition, defensive behavior, aggression and the ability of the dog to work off and calm down rapidly after being exposed to stressful situations. This test was developed for the Svenska Brukhundklubben (Swedish Working Dog Association) and is widely used in Scandinavian countries, also for pet animalsTraining is non-important, and dogs could be either trained or non-trained, as it simply reacts to a variety of stimuli, such as a mechanical rabbit, noises, shapes or creatures. During the test, the dog must cope with stressful mental, (but no physical) situations by itself without any assistance or commands from its handler. Between exercises the dog is allowed to unwind totally before moving on to the next challenge. The test is recognized by KUSA and, although it is a non-mandatory test, the “APT†or “APT EX†qualification will be added to the registered name of a dog that has passed the test. Qualifying certificates however are only issued to dogs registered with KUSA. | |||
